Here's the Answer, What's the question?

Info about activity

ESOL entry 1 students were learning how to make recommendations in informal social situations. They had to reveal the general topic of film and film genres in this starter activity.  They were asked to make questions for which the answer was ‘Lincoln’. 

    The steps
 

  • Write an answer to a question on the board

  • Learners individually write questions to the projected answer on mini-whiteboards

  • Learners share their questions with the class before teacher reveals the real question.

Top tips -  Encourage learners to think of creative responses to what the question might be. For example, sharing an acronym such as TIPS or COSHH and encouraging learners to identify what each word within the answer might represent.
